Pegaso's 90mm Centurion from their old Elite series. Painted in acrylics with oil and ink washes on the metals then weathered with pigments. Shield design for the 10th Fretensis Legion taken from Stephen Dando- Collins' excellent book "Legion of Rome" which has the shield design of all of the imperial Roman legions. I also need to point out they are not steel greaves, but silvered greaves made out of bronze or copper alloy

That book's a real cracker, one of my favourite references source, and it's great to see a shield design executed so well. A superbly painted figure....so refreshing to see a shield with something other than wings and thunderbolts!(y) Roma Victor.

Quite old now, but still a great figure. I think this was the first Pegaso figure I ever painted.

I really like what you've done with it. Love the muted reds. How did you obtain that? I struggle painting red, I always have in mind how I want it to look, but it usually ends up too brown, too orange or (occasionally, and even worse) too pink, so any tips would be appreciated.

Do not add white to your basic red ! otherwise, you ll get pink.
Most often than not, your basic red will be your highlight, not the highest one but very near.

Thanks for the comments fellas. The base for the cloak is Vallejo Cavalry Brown + Khaki Grey. The Cavalry Brown I've been using for a while as it gives that more worn, muted red look. You can also mix it with English Uniform or a little bit of Burnt Umber for heavy cloaks. To highlight I add a mix of muted yellows and orange and then a pale flesh on the edges to represent fraying. To shade a bit of US Olive Drab and Black added to the base colour.

It is wonderful. Congrats for completion !
