I usually use the Humbrol "Track color" for the base coat of chain mail. It appears that it has not yet been released in the new formula paints and I am out of the colour.
What would you suggest for a base colour either in enamals or acrylics?
Thanks
John

Black with a bit of chocolate brown, then some black with boltgun metal (citadel) lights with boltgun metal and a bit of silver (printer ink) shadows with washes of black (oils)
Hope this helps

I also used Humbrol 173 Track Colour as base for chainmail. Today I use Humbrol 98 Chocolate Brown with a dab of Humbrol 33 Black and some drops of Humrol 113 Rust.

Vallejo Track Colour is very close as well.

Hi John,

For me its a Brown/Black mix (Vallejo or Reaper) , Citadel have some great chainmail metallics ...plenty of washes of course as well as putting a bit of wear/rust .

I see all the answers are Acrylics what about those that do oils (I know John sked about Acrylics) ?

Hello John, If you can't find Humbrol track color, why not try Testor's for an enamel. They have brown colors close to Humbrol's track color. Here are only a few: Skin Tone Tint Base-Dark B-2002, Burnt Umber B-2005, RawUmber B-2006, and Burnt Sienna B-2007. Hope this helps. Regards, SG:)

I personally use Humbrol 98 Chocolate Brown as a base coat when using enamels and Rhinox Hide from Citadel if using acrylics. I drybrush the metallic colours on chainmail using printers ink - gold or silver, to which I add Raw Umber oil paint to reduce brightness as required. I sparingly highlight with pure printers ink.
