Normally you have a macro mode. I think this is the button with a flower. You have to activated it and so you can put your camera closer to the figure to make pics (but do not forget that by doing so you will reduce the lighting).
I have a P80 too. To turn on macro, turn on the camera (ok, a little obvious there ), then on the back press the flower. A screen will come up with AF, flower, mountain - with the same bottom side of the button (the flower) page down to the flower and press ok. That's it. Close up pictures come out much clearer. I use the basic auto function when using macro (the dial on top is set to the green camera). I hope that made sense.
