Hi to one and all ,
Its my pleasure to receive a review figure from Terry Karselis at Pony Soldier , this time we have a very apt subject in the wintery weather we have been having in the UK , no doubt its a lot worse in the US and Canada ...

Title : Cold Comfort

Scale : 200 mm

Sculptor : Terry Karselis

Material: Light Beige Resin

The subject is based on a film starring Charlton Heston called "Will Penny" , made back in 1968 , directed by Tom Cries from Paramount Studio's.

Here are the inspiration pictures that Terry has used as a reference .

Cold Comfort

Moving on now to the actual model , no box art on my review sample but I believe its WIP , the parts come in the high quality box well packed to prevent any transit damage .

Consisting of a total of 6 parts , the Torso , head , arm , hand , scarf and base , all in a creamy beige resin .
Cold Comfort is posed well wrapped up in a sheepskincoat with scarf around his ears which at the same time is keeping his hat from blowing away in the bitter wintery weather ....a little enjoyment is gleamed from the cigarette he holds inbetween his mittened glove.

Looking quickly at the small turned base , nicely done but for me a little small and most would I feel change to a brass rod but this is obviously a personal choice , there is a amount of excess rthat needs to be remeoved by careful use of a Dremel and razor saw

Cold Comfort

Lets have a look at the pieces that make the kit up firstly the head, this is as I said well wrapped up in a scarf which is keeping his ears protected from the biting cold , also which keeps his hat on in the severe winds .

The facial features are wonderful , craggy , well defined with a moustache and goatee beard that just seems to typify the character , all of which will help the painting of the face ..keep him cold and frost bitten though !!!!

He is wearing a typical battered stetson which is brought together by the nicely defined scarf that wraps over the hat and under the chin , nice folds on the scarf , there is a minute mould line along the top which was very easily removed by using wet and dry .

Looking at this whilst I am reviewing makes me want to reach for my Kolinsky (y)

Cold Comfort

Looking now at the Torso , he is as the title suggest in harsh weather conditions and as such is wearing a sheepskin coat nicely defined on the folds with the wool collar and edges really well defined especially on the shouders and sleeve tops ...just crying out for washes to bring out the details .

There is a nice fitment point for the left arm (see next post) and the head, also cast on is the lower part of the scarf , again nicely sculpted .

My only slight concern is that the depth of the shoulders seems a little shallow (see full views in later post) and perhaps could be more pronounced at the top rear shoulder...but perhaps Charlton Heston was like this !!!

Overall though nicely done with nice fitment points and sculpting on the clothing ..

Cold Comfort

Looking at the remainder of the pieces that make up the model these being :

The Left Arm .....nicely sculpted , there is a small amount of resin to remove from the elbow ,the arm fits into the shoulder very nicely and also has a plug of resin to fit the gloved hand onto .

The Glove ....... this is also well sculpted with a ribbed wristband to keep the cold out , the actual glove is made of leather which will be really brought out by careful painting , inbetween the fingers is the ever present cigarette (don't forget the smoke when you do the model:D)

The Scarf end ....this is the piece that is blowing in the snowy and strong and bitterly cold , fitting is secure and well defined .

Cold Comfort

Lets now put it all together (note for the purpose of the review blu tac has been used)

Once the small amount of prep has been done you will have a model which fits well together and is will paint up very well , allowing the painter to let his imagination and techniques to be employed to get the most out of the features sculpted by Terry .

The fianl picture shows a painted version by Will Leary from "Glory Guy Miniatures" (www.gloryguys.com)

Conclusion:
Terry has chosen a great subject and although for some perhaps the sculpting can be a little heavy you will get a very special piece that will look great in the display cabinet and attract lots of comments ...I recommend this bust to all .

Cold Comfort can be obtained from Terry at the reasonable cost of $39.95 plus shipping .

Have a look at his website www.ponysoldierminiatures.com, there are lots of nice busts on there , on subjects that are a little out of the ordinary which is very nice to see .
