Hi all,

I am learning the technics and I am very interested in your opinion about some of my figures. I attach in this case a scottish man from Andrea Catalogue painted with Vallejo colors.

My goal is to learn more. Please, give my your comments

Hi Rafael
Going only by the Photograph, bearing in mind the camera
does lie. I am drawn to the facial tones I feel there is not enough
contrast, to show the character of the face. The eye detail
needs work,as there appears to be a lot of white in the eyes.
This gives the appearance of an unatural stare, once again it could be the photograph.

Other areas, particularly the tartan look pretty good

This appraisal is a purely personal opinion, it is in no way to be seen
as anything other than encouraging. I wish you every success in your
future painting projects so you may enjoy the world of figures as much as
I do.

Rafael-

Frank gives some very good comments.

I very much like the patterning of the tartan.
You have made a good start on the boots but perhaps a bit more weathering? This is always a tough thing for me.
The shadow and highlight contrast is a little too stark on his blouse. Maybe a bit more layered transition?

Did the base come with the figure? More detail on the base with differnet size rock and stones? Some additional plants or plant material.

I echo Franks comments about encouragement. These are meant as suggestions.

Pls post some more photo's of your work!

Keith

I would like to see a couiple more photos. I agree about eyes. You shold cut them back to fit in the socket. The whites look way too big, and you may wany to use a more "fleshy" color. Pure white is too stark in my opinion (y) .

The rest looks pretty good, very neat (staying in the lines).

Frank, Keith, Tom,

Thanks a lot for your comments. I agree your comments about the eyes. Perhaps too big (and also the white color problem).

About the skin tone Do you have any ideas about how to paint it? I will appreciate your experience about it.

I will try to get more photos but I have not digital camara (I made this photo with my friends' camera).

Abot the base, it come with the figure but I complete it with some sand. Perhaps too dark!!

Thanks again for your comments. This is very important for me.

Regards
Rafa

Hi Rafael
This might sound simplistic but rather than giving actual colour refs
1-mix or find a base colour that can be darkened or lightened but
will essentially compliment the oridginal mix. You need this for graduation

2-Apply this base colour to the facial areas, next transfer some of the base
colour to another well on your pallette and darken with a mid brown.
Apply to all shadow areas (note this colour must be thinner than the base colour)

3-You should have a face that is begining to have some shape.
Take some more base colour and lighten it with some off/white (white+yellow is ok) apply this to the higlight areas. This gives form to the face.

4-Now study your work so far, there will be areas where the transition between
light and dark produce a definite line. This can be corrected by mixing a tiny amount of shadow colour with the highlight colour. This will blur the line between the two. If your highlight appears too bright, some very thinned down base colour
will pull it back.Hope this is of some help to you, just ask if you need any more
