Hi everyone;

I wanted to try and devote some energy toward 54 mm figures. (I usually like larger stuff.) So I asked for a bunch of figures for Christmas in this smaller scale, and I humbly present to you my first 54mm in a very long time. I'm trying very hard to get the high contrast in values I see other painter's accomplishing to a very pleasing effect. I'm not sure I'm heading in the right direction, then again I'm not entirely unhappy with the way this lancer turned out. But, if anyone would care to help me out with a few pointers, tips or criticisms, I would sure appreciate it.

Glenn,
I would say I think the blues on the uniform have turned out quite nicely. The only place I would say needs maybe a bit more contrast would be the standard. I looks like it could use a bit more in the deep shadows. If the spear the standard is mounted to is wood, I might suggest a bit of wood grain on it to simulate the wood a bit more.

Over all I think it works quite well!

I agree with Jay's assessment and advice, you are definitely headed in that right direction.

Keep up the good work

54mm !!? I saw the painted figure before I read the text and thought it was at least 90mm - great painting, the blues especially. The shading has worked fine - blues can washout really easily if not done correctly.

glenn, nice job for your first 54mm figure. I would also have to say that you could work a little more into the conrast of the colors. Don't be afraid to be a bit bolder here.~Gary

Thanks everyone. I got so wrapped up on the uniform that I completely forgot to do anything to the standard at all, outside of putting on the basic colours.I will go back and make sure that piece of detail is attended to. Thanks guys, those are the kind of observations that will really help imrove my skills.

I can onlu echo the others. You did a good job for 54mm Glenn. Keep up the good work.
