This is the first time that I've tried deep water on a base, so I've started this thread so that you can all chip in with pertinent advise and anyone attempting something similar can learn from my inevitable mistakes!
Early days yet, I'm just in basic construction, but, basically, I shall be using multiple pours of pebeo crystal resin to fill up to a little way below the top of the post. All hints and tips welcome!

The plan, so far, is four sheets of plasticard to form a box (all corners filled with putty of course). The top of the box will be at the level of the fill as I'll need to go right to the top to avoid a concave surface after drying.

Make sure it is leak free before you pour and make sure you test a small amount against the type of paint you are using on the base. these 2 things seem to be common mistakes. Hope this helps.

cheers Zane

Cheers fella! I'd been intending to coat everything that would be covered with a gloss varnish, so hopefully that'll solve the paint reaction thing.

Right so, stage 2, base painted and sealed with gloss varnish, next I shall remove the masking tape, replace it with packing tape then use a contact adhesive (uhu, evo-stick) to attach the plastic sheets to the packing tape.
Unless anyone stops me first, feel free to intervene if I'm about to do something dumb.☺

The resin's arrived! Seems to be everything I need in the pack, I'll start to pour as soon as I've painted all these weeny fish.

First pour turned out to be leakier than I realised, lost about a third of it. Plugged the leak as it dried though so sorted! On to pour number 3 tonight, and I'm angling the whole thing during each pour so the little fishes aren't all swimming on a uniform plain.

This looks great so far Jim (y)

I'm watching with great interest as I've got a project on the go at the minute that needs some water effects and, like you, I've never tried this sort of thing before. My main problem is that I need to make a 3mm layer of resin look like a 2m deep pool. I won't be doing anything as sophisticated as your carp, I just want to simulate some depth.

Cheers! I think a way to go for the illusion of depth could be done with how you paint the underlying base. Very dark in the deepest sections fading to lighter in the shallows. A drop of ink to tint the resin would make the bottom less distinct also perhaps?
