This is probably a long shot, but do any of you have a coolpix 2100?
The reason I ask is I'm hoping to buy myself (sorry - the wife - must remember that! ) one for Xmas, but being a pauper my budget is quite small :(
If the reviews I've read are to be believed, this camera should be sufficient for my needs, but not many camera reviewers have the scale modeller in mind!

Nikons "Blurb" claims that the Macro mode will focus down to about 5cm, which, if it's even remotely true would be fine, but I'm worried that there's no manual aperture setting (what do I expect for the price?) so DOF might be a problem.
The camera does have various auto modes, one of them being landscape (large DOF!) but there's no mention of whether these modes can be used in conjunction with the Macro!

BTW I can pick one of these up for around £150 ($254 US)

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Simon, I have a Nikon Coolpix 885 and I'm happy with what it can do. I picked it up on Ebay for about $269 (US). Check out my Marine pics. I'm sure I'll upgrade to a better (more expensive) camera down the road, but for now it does the job.~Gary

Thanks Gary,

From what I can see, the 2100 is only a slightly poorer relation to the 885 anyway!
So that's OK! The 885 doesn't have macro does it? If you can get images like that without it, I'm sold on the 2100 with macro at 5cm!!

Cheers for your input, looks like you've made Nikon a few more Yen!
(I'm a Nikon fan anyway, got an F65 last year)

Hi I got teh little brother to the 885 the 775 you should have seen teh number of these cameras in use at Euro if that many ppl buy em then they gotta be ok so I think the Coolpix 2100 should be ok

The 885 and 775 both have macro I think

Simon, Yes, it does have macro. My manual says I can zoom within 4cm of the subject. As I said, the camera does the job. I find I'm still in the process of learning how to use it, so hopefully my photos will improve over time.~Gary

Simon, Yes, it does have macro.
My mistake - sorry! :(
I was basing that on a comparison I did on the first site I found with a google search!
It said that the close focus was 30cm! (That'll teach me not to trust the first thing I read won't it!)

Cheers
Simon
