sculpted by Julian Hullis

When I saw the description in John's Models website stating this figure was sculpted by Julian Hullis I had to order it. Julian Hullis is one of my favorite sculpters and has lived up to his reputation with this figure.

The figure is comprised of 8 resin parts and came loosely packed in styrofoam chips in a plain white box with the box art for reference.

The figure is beautifully sculpted with the attention to detail Julian Hullis is noted for, especially the hands,

The one area John needs to pay a little more attention to with his casting is the air-holes I found with this figure. All were easy to repair with the bulk being at the bottom of the trousers and one on the left boot.

Below are photos of another version painted by Steve Walker (Courtsey of A. Hopwood's Gallery).

Mr. Adrian Hopwood objected to me by email that I used images of Steve's Mamluk that were from his website.......so I removed them........sorry guys

Conclusion A beautifully sculpted figure to paint. Casting is mid-range as far as quality and improvements can be made here as I am sure John will. I will add that when I recieved the figure in the mail it was missing the upper portions of the weapons that fit under the sash. I called John's Models and he stated "No problem....will be mailed outy today"..I recieved them 3 days later in the mail. Excellent Customer Service.

Its amazing the detail that Steve brought out with his painting. When you get an excellent figure combined with an excellent painter it equals BOS for sure.

Thanks for the photo Dave.

So you're not telling folk that you didn't ask if you could use them Guy. Tell the full story please.

Adrian.

I have a copy of the figure as it was released by Ft Duqquesne and it's super. If it's present manufacturercan correct the air bubble problem and maintain good quality control i'm sure it will again be a popular figure. There's no doubting what a super piece of sculpture it paints up into. ~Gary

Adrian.
No, I didn't ask and did not see a copyright mark. If I have to ask before I use an image for the betterment of the hobby, then its the members who lose out. Many do not get the chance to attend a show and can only rely on the magazines or websites for a review of a kit they may be interested in.

When I see an image on a website and it does not have a copyright mark, yes, I do use it and in this case give the artist credit for the figure. I even stated where I found the image.

We have an open policy with people (other forums, magazines where articles originated here on the planet in vbench postings) that for the betterment of the hobby, feel free to use them.

If I upset you Adrian by using an image from your website and giving you credit for it, I am sorry and I apologize. It has been noted on the review so others will not do the same.

Thank youfor the apology Guy.

I have no problem with people using the pictures off my site for reference, I do think though that it's polite to ask before using them to show a painted example in a review.
It is only right that you ask before using other people's property.
If the photos' are mine, then I'd expect to be asked. If, as in this case, the photos belong to someone else, then they need to be asked. If it's on my site, then I can get in touch with them on your behalf. That would never be a problem.
You didn't name the site directly however, and I would not expect everyone to know where to look for my site. Maybe I'm wrong in that, and my fame is a lot greater than I believe, it's a great compliment you give me there, for which I thank you.
There is however a full article, written by Steve Walker on The Basement, which people might find helpful if they are tackling this kit, or one of a similar subject.
The address for the site is :-
http://www.adrianhopwood.co.uk
and if you go through into the Basement articles section, it's the first one at the top lef tof the page.
Copyright law extends to text and phots, not just the kits that we buy. Most of us get upset at the re-casting that's being done, which we see occasionally on EBay.
It's easy to slip when you're enthusiastic about a subject, and as I truly believe in this case, you meant no harm by your actions. That's why I e-mailed you initally. I didn't think that this needed airing in public.
Many thanks for the consideration you've shown in this.
Adrian

Hi chaps,

I think then that concludes the matter (thank you Adrian and Guy), and yes probably an issue that could of been settled out of the public eye.

Maybe all parties are happy now, myself included, now lets get back to the serious issue of figure painting!!!!!

Cheers Steve Walker ;)
