Good morning to all planeteers.
I am taking the liberty of writing a review for one of the latest releases by one of my most favorite companies, the Spanish manufacturer El Taller.
The driving force behind the company is Mr Miguel Himenez Bravo,a true romantic of the figure world who still believes that historical accuracy is an absolute must for any release,a principle that I follow with all my heart too.
El Taller has at least three different lines of figures......One of them is dedicated to kings and emperors from the beginning of the 20th century.
The subjects are presented mounted and every possible care has been taken by Miguel who is the prime researcher in order for the figures to be uniformologicaly true to the actual historical personalities.Extensive documentation is always used (books, photos, army regulations etc)
In this series,Miguel decided to launch King Konstantinos of Greece (Kingship is abolished in Greece now but back in the beginning of the 20th century Greece was a kingdom) as he would have appeared during his stay in Germany as an observer of that country's military excercises prior to the outbreak of WWI.
Imagine the surprise of all us Greek modellers when just after that Miguel decided to release a limited edition of the king in his Greek Army uniform as he would have appeared as a Commander In Chief of the Greek Army of Thessaly and Macedonia during the First Balkan War.
This figure comes in a beautiful metal box with the company's monogram on top, wrapped in a jacket with the boxart.
The box itself is tied with a string that is secured by a wax seal again with the company's monogram (T).
Inside this box one comes across a second photograph of the painted figure from a different angle and a sheet containing a brief historical outline of the king's life and career as well as notes on his uniform both in English and Greek.
Further down comes the figure:the horse comes in two halves with the head and tail in separate pieces......The casting is superb.
There are absolute no mould lines or any other imperfections and the metal is of the highest quality.
The fit is also excellent and only minimal amounts of putty will be needed during the assembly.
The king comes in four parts:Torso with legs, head, two arms.Quality of metal, casting and fit are of the highest standard possible.
The uniform is faithfully reproduced in stark, well defined lines. The artist has managed not only to capture the king's facial qualities but to achieve an amazing likeness of Konstantinos and bearing in mind that the figure is 54mm proper that is definitely a feat worth mentioning.
The rest of the details (sword, reins, stirrups etc) come in delicately cast pieces, correctly sized for the figure's scale.
Last but not least, the box contains a resin base and a wooden plinth for mounting and presenting the finished figure.
As a conclusion this is a very luxurious release,a true collectors item,of excellent quality and highly accurate.
Miguel has raised the bar very high with this release and we Greek modellers wish to express our thanks to him for making every effort to produce such an interesting personality from our country's recent history.
