What better way to spend my free time than to share a recently release that I purchased from the company called Elan 13 Miniatures who according to the owner Rob Lane produces models that are :
"Sculpted with love, swearing and occasionally stuff being thrown about"
Rob himself is a talented sculptor and award winning painter who loves fine details and appreciates quality sculpting , among his favourite periods are the Monmouth Rebellion period , ECW and Medieval , so its no surprise that these periods feature in the range .
The one we will be looking at is one that I feel could infact be any officer from virtually any country late ECW and early 1700's , it does not depict an actual uniform as these were very much a personal choice of officers especially at these times .
As Rob has said he has the good fortune to work alongside some very talented modellers , both painters and sculptors amongst them a certain Mr John Regan , those of you that are members of the BMSS (British Model Soldier Society) will know him as a doyen of the society and as editor of the magazine .www.bmssonline.com
Details of the model :
Title: The Old Major
Scale: 1/12th
Material: Resin
No of pieces : 1
Sculpted by: John Regan
Box Art by: Rob Lane
The model was received well packed in a flip over clear plastic container , the piece being secured in a clear bag ....a backing and front card is also included with various views of a painted model .
Prep consists only of removing the casting plug from the underside , although I can see no reason why this could not be used to mount the completed bust to a base (a small amount of sanding will be needed if you choose this option) ...me I will use a brass rod!!!
As I said the piece is a single one the lower part being finished just above the breast bone .
John has sculpted this with him wearing a cuirass with a ornate sword belt across his chest ..or perhaps it might be a sash .
At his neck he has a cravat hanging down , on his head he wears a wig .
Lets start with the lower torso first , as I said he wears a cuirass with securing straps over the shoulders , nice details all the way ....great opportunity to get the NMM techniques flowing .
Across his chest we have the sword belt/Sash , this is plainly sculpted with no details allowing the painter to either leave it plain or go wild , the edges have a edging , again this is finely done ...all will be brought out in washes and delicate highlighting .
The cravat/neck cloth he wears hangs niecly again with delicate edging being worked .
The facial features are in one word SUPERB , this is a soldier who has seen his share of war and certainly had more than his share of food and wine during tiring campaigns .
The face is as you can see a painters dream so full of character , he is "triple" chinned , moustached ..... no doubt full of remanants of his last meal !!! together with a small goatee beard , his nose is prominant and pointed , his eyebrows are beautifully done , he has a well furrowed brow ..this guy can tell lots of stories and would no doubt be a man who is ready to stop all the campaigning ..he has done his stint!!!
On now to the crowing glory ......the hairpiece ....again the only word I can use is SUPERB , ringlets , curls and the way the hair falls onto the shoulders are spot on ...just look at the pictures folks .
My thoughts on this...well presented and a brilliant sculpt ...not your normal soldier but one with style and personalilty , no unforms details to worry about so you can go as wild as you want ....most of all you will enjoy the process from purchase to display.
Here are some other pictures from this era :
On the website Rob says there will be more from John ....I do hope so ...soon .
Enjoy this lovely bust guys ...a lot of fun .
