Hi all,

What is the general consensus on using decals for the eyes ? Is it considered "cheating", in a sense ?

Thanks

There exist decals for eyes? Where and in which scale?

Nevertheless it is everyone's own decision to use "helps" or not. I know that several people use decals for heraldic and why not for eyes? I try to paint heraldic sign myself but it looks  And eyes? Better but not always good. Sometimes my tries depends on the sculptor and his possibilities to "make" eyes. So why not decals in that cases?

Some people will think so (but they're wrong ).

Other than any difficulties in getting them into place and to settle against the sculpted eye, the main problem I have with them is that they might end up looking wrong - too crisp and that will stand out from all the hand-painted stuff around them - which defeats the entire purpose of using them.

Eyes can be challenging to paint, especially to a high standard, but struggling with this and overcoming it will help other aspects of your painting. You can get to the point where you can paint the eyes after the face is complete, rather than having to do them first because of the potential for mistakes... other than being able to see what you're doing properly (good lighting, vision aids if necessary) getting to the point where you're not sweating about the eyes will mean you have good hand control and are more in charge of paint consistency and application.

Zotz decals also do some. I have never used them and probably never will and I think each to their own. I dont think its cheating though some will, I guess its the same with aircraft modellers and the like ie is photo etch and resin update kits cheating?????

Once upon a time I used decals for iris and pupils. I made a photograph and from these I made a set of decals - but in 1:1 scale. I used them on a 1:1 figurine just for speeding up the project, but since then I always painted them, any scale, from 1:1 to 1:72.

I have seen the Archer decals but I was not convinced - IMHO they are looking like coming from a comic.

Mostly these decals are printed 'centred'. So some fiddling around to get an eye ball looking left or right will be involved.

Plus, I could never work out what to with the excess, as the eyes are printed perfectly round, IRL they are naturally framed by the eye lids. So what to do with the excess carrier film around the edges?

Pre trim, post trim, bit of both, paint over the excess, hope like hell it doesn't wrinkle during application.......

not quite sure if the energy invested equals the reward.....

just my thoughts.....

Cheers
