Anyone know why most of the photos and drawings I see of F&IWar British artillery have ammo boxes fixed to the axle next to the cheeks and ones I see from the Rev War don't? The Royal Artilley Museum was no help.

Mike, here's a Troiani Rev. War plate with the ammo boxes as you describe. I have a feeling and I am sure I've read it somewhere that only the smaller calibre guns had the boxes fitted like this. Is this theory backed up by the photo's and illustrations you've seen?

I saw some 12lb'ders at Ft Ligonier with the ammo boxes. Almost every F&I War piece I've seen has them but almost all of the Rev War period pieces don't. Might have been a change at some point but I can

't pin it down.
