The first Russian victory!


So far, the Russians in the Northern War against Charles XII. suffered only defeats by the Sewdish.

But Tsar Petr I used the autumn and winter break to reorganize his troops. They are now better equipped and managed more competently.



Several smaller skirmishes between Russians and Swedes take place in northeastern Ukraine in January and February.

On February 22, 1709, Russian troops led by Peter I himself caught a Swedish army sacking the town of Krasnaya Kuta...





... and force the Swedes to flight with heavy losses...:



Here, Russian dragoons surround a Swedish troop with Karl XII. in the middle and almost manage to capture the king...:



Charles XII gets beaten out by his lifeguards...



...but has to retreat to Grodno with his badly battered troops...:
