Hi Guys ,

Just a question to you all ........

When painting figures in any scale includinding busts how do you deal with finger and Toenails ??

(Using both Acrylics and Oils)

Cheers

Hi Nap
I paint the area a slightly lighter and pinker shade than the surrounding flesh area, add a once again slightly whiter strip around the outer edge to replicate the dead/grown nail and once the figure is done, add a semi gloss to it.
Hope this helps
Ben

Using your own nails as reference is a good start, but they vary more than you might expect from person to person (as well as in how well they're sculpted and/or cast on figures) so it's worth collecting together a bit of reference for some variety where necessary.

How you paint them is partly down to scale, not many of us for example can paint the white nail or the crescent accurately at 1/35 scale or smaller but obviously this is easier at larger scales. One thing I think isn't done often enough is dirty nails, which were probably far more common on soldiers than the opposite!

It's easy to overdo but if the scale allows, and other parts of the figure are done with varied finishes, it's worth trying to do some sheen on nails too.

Flame tart red was Dennis the menace's choice ,I prefer Goth black  matches my Fender Strat :singing:

I thought toe nail polished had to be tastefully matched to you tartan....and there's limited choice in that for some folk.

Rons family (clan) tartan being Sicilian is a black check on a black background.
With thanks to our mate Brian for the idea.
