After a 16-year hiatus I decided it was time to start wetting some brushes again. Only this time I am going to try my hand with acrylics only. So far I am very happy with them and although there is an expected learning curve I think I am sold on them. Also first time using Rosemary & Co. brushes and I think I prefer them over my W&N Series 7 especially considering costs and quality.

Here’s my first figure in 16 years and my first acrylic. Art Girona’s 54mm Crutchfield Artillery. I added a PE cartridge box plate & belt plate, a tin cup, and to the Federal overcoat I added the missing buttons & 18” rear vent while beefing up the cuffs per the originals. I reshaped the kepi crown to reflect a Richmond Depot cap, added new shoe laces and got rid of the cheesy goatee.

BTW, I added some small “tick marks” along the bottom edge of the overcoat to indicate wear and small tears. The bottom edges were raw and un-hemmed.

Gentlemen;

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Now I have 16 years of figure research to catch up with.......mostly the American Civil War.

Nap - to answer your question: I really like acrylics especially for uniforms and faster drying time. In 54mm they give me enough control and I think they are easier to mix to the colors I am trying to achieve.
