Hi Everyone. I'm new on here.

I've made my first few resin figurines and am really pleased with the outcome. I'm looking to frame these figurines as part of an overall design with a print in a 3D box frame. The figurine is goign to stand inside the box infront of the print. My question is what are the best acrylic paints to use and also do I need to finish the fingurine with a sealer to prevent the paint from discolouring or cracking over time? I'm not sure where these frames will hang so could be in direct sunlight therefore have to assume that they could discolour. Has anyone had issues with discolouring over time without sealant.

If a sealer is required I'd like to find a matt paint on variety rather than spray on and also the same for the paints I am using. The figurine is quite small so would be impossible to spray paint due to some very intricate areas.

I'm based in the UK so hopefully any advice regarding paints/sealers and good brushes to use can all be purchased from UK suppliers.

thanks for any help in advance.

Hi Dave

BIG WELCOME to PF , good to have you here .

Where abouts in UK are you , might be a club near you ?

Sounds interesting what you have in mind

Best acrylics ...so many to choose from , I use Jo Sonja , dead matt and in tubes , also Reaper paints are very good indeed , in dropper bottles

There are also P3 paints , Vallejo, Andrea, Scale 75

Sealing ....You could use a varnish , satin or matt

Discolouring in light ...can't say I have noticed on my displays

Jo Sonja can be bought from a company called Broken Toad www.brokentoad.co.uk

Reaper from www.miniature-heroes.co.uk

Brushes ....Broken Toad , Rosemary's Brushes www.rosemaryandco.com , The Brush man ( David Jackson email : [email protected]

All are on FB as well

There are series 7 from W & N ..but expensive

Go for Kolinsky brushes...but as with paints it's a personal choice really

Acrylics will dry very fast I use a retarder ( W & N Blending medium ) as well as a wet palette

Hope this helps

thanks Nap for your reply. I've ended up purchasing various vallejo model colour paints and also the white vallejo primer. I also purchased a kit of model painting brushes that had good reviews on amazon. I didn't go for a particular brand for these until I've had a few trail paint tests with my models and from there I'll look to upgrade to otherbrands. Most reviews said the brushes were s good as expensive brands so will wait and see.

As for the sealer maybe I don't actually need this then. I was originally going to have my models cast in ceramic and the company making these for me said that I should finish with a sealer to prevent the acrylic from peeling off over time and also to protect against UV light as my models are being placed into frames. Because I've switched to using resin for my models I was under the impression that it was the same process, as if a frame was in direct sunlight it could cause the colour to lighten especially if using acrylic paints.

Your project sounds interesting. I did have a thought that might help - depending on your layout with the frame, it might be possible to put glass in the frame and protect your figures that way. I am sure you can get some good UV filter glass. This would also help with keeping dust out.
