Hi all,

Questions. Have prepped and assembled my figure and for the first time ever going to give painting a shot this weekend. Using Vallejo acryclis and need some advice on colour mixes for base, highlights and shadows.

  • What is a good mix for painting flesh and beard?
  • I'm painting a light skinned middle east subject... so what is the best way to add a slightly brown tinge and tan to the flesh colours?
  • What is a good mix for painting a medium to slightly dark blue?
  • What is a good mix for painting a dull medium grey?
Thanks

Without knowing what colours you have to work with it's hard to suggest mixes you're sure to be able to try but the last two are pretty easy to approach generically.

What is a good mix for painting a medium to slightly dark blue?
Take a dark blue and add some white. Seriously it can be that simple and it can work just fine, depending on the blue (and the colour you're aiming for). If you don't get the kind of colour you like using white alone try using any other light colours you have, see the kind of results you get. Flesh colours, something like sand and light greys can all work really nicely to lighten many dark blues.

What is a good mix for painting a dull medium grey?
One of the best ways to mix greys is simply to start with white + black and work from there. As this will be blueish you only need to add in a little of an earth colour to make a perfect neutral grey; most any dark brown should do the job. If you use a little more brown in the mix you get some nice brownish greys which can be very attractive (useful for shading off-white for example).
