Good evening all.
looking for your best flesh tones in oils mixes.
I've been dabbling with a few new ones but am looking for any feedback
on ones you've had luck with.
Perfect English weather for painting:wtf:
Cheers to a long winter where the missus has loads to do.

Hi Jonathon,
This is not an easy question to answer and is dependant on the figure you are painting.
Most European flesh painting revolve around yellow ochre, different reds and white. Sometimes a spot of green or blue adds a little realism to the colour.
I can recommend a book; Colour mixing recipes for portraits by William F Powell. In this he offers hundreds of skin, eyes, lips and hair mixes. It is available at Amazon from £2.20 for a new copy.

Good luck and just call out if you need any help.
Cheers,
Keith

Jonathan,
Here's some I copied and pasted into my painting notes from various oil on canvas websites, I've tried a few and they've worked pretty well.

Roger.

1. Titanium white.
2. Cadmium Red Light.
3Cadmium Yellow Medium.
4. Yellow Ochre.
5. Burnt Sienna.
6. Burnt Umber.
7. Ultramarine Blue.
For light flesh tones use colours 1, 2, 3, and 5.
For medium flesh tones use 2, 3, 4 and 5.
For dark flesh tones use 2, 5, 6 and 7.

More skin tones.
  • burnt siena and white
  • English red and white
  • Yellow ochre, alizarine crimson and white
  • for Asian skintones, use a little more yellow ochre and some raw umber
  • for olive skintones, add raw umber
  • for dark skintones, add burnt umber

I'd like to second Keith's recommendation, Powell's book has more than 500 different mixes that cover many different ethnicities and colour combinations for skin, eyes, lips and hair.......very handy book.

Here's a very simple one I used recently and turned out well'
Warm Sepia,Tit White and any red oil colour. That's the lot.
