It is a Scottish Gentleman form 1860. Danillo Cartacci painted this guy with the MacLachlan tartan.
In my believe this is totally wrong.
If I search the WWW if only find these MacLachlan tartan from that periode.
MacLachlan Clan Tartan Ancient.pngMacLachlan Clan Tartan.pngMacLachlan_tartan_(Vestiarium_Scoticum).png
The first one is a ancient MacLachlan, the second one is the Tartan of todays registerd in 1850. and the last one published into the Vestiarium Scoticum.
As you all can see there is a great difference between the originals and the one's Danillo painted.
Where do I go right??????????????

Marc

I prefer the yellow tartan, as its a good contrast with the darker clothing on the rest of the figure/badger

Hi Marc. As you're probably aware most of the tartan today were produced from the mid 19th century onwards following its ban after the Battle of Culloden.
That being said many clans had earlier distinctive tartan the colours of which were largely determined by the production of local plant based dyes.
So basically you can go with pretty much what pleases your eye

Personally I'd go with the weathered version as shown on the girls coat. This is similar in 'look' to several examples from around the mid 18th Century.
Cheers
