Hi everyone, I'm looking for some help in relation to facing colours for the French 4th Cuirassiers at Waterloo as I'm working my way through Mitches Military Models "Duelling Heavies" set at the moment. Gordon has provided a copy of a painting with the kit showing the action which appears to show red collars and turn backs and red vandyke edging on the sheepskin shabraque. My Bukhara/McBride book Napoleons Cavalry appears to suggest that the facings were aurore between 1812-15 and were on the cuffs and cuff flaps. If this is correct, what colour were the turn backs (red?) and collar (blue?). A quick look on the internet has confused matters more in that I found a reference which suggests the turn backs were aurore and the vandyke edging to the sheepskin was the same.

Any help and pointers would, as always, be greatly appreciated.

Neal.

I can only tell you when I did a 4th Cuirassier I did aurore on collar, turn backs and wolf's teeth on the sheepskin. If memory serves that was according to the Rousselotte (sp?) book.

Hi

In my collection of books relating to cuirassiers the 4th in 1815 had aurore collars piped blue, aurore turnbacks, aurore cuffs piped blue, aurorecuff flaps piped blue. The sheepskin wolfsteeth should also be aurore. the only difference between the 4th, 5th and 6th at this time were the colous of cuffs and cuff flaps.

Cheers

Huw, that is absolutely fantastic. Thanks for that and taking the time to reply, it is much appreciated. I now know where to come if I have any more cuirassier related questions.

For newbies
Vandyke :
: a wide collar with a deeply indented edge: one of several V-shaped points forming a decorative edging: a border of such points
: a trim pointed beard

sorry .. still confused ? ;)

(y) Spot on, Huw, I agree. Who's going to argue with a Cuirassier 'enthusiast' ? Some might say"nutter", but not me....Oh dear, no:LOL:

Alan

Thanks for the vote of confidence Alan. My feelings were hurt when you suggested that some might say "nutter" but the voices told me I needn't worry and that it was a joke....:)
