Hi all, i am learning to paint with acrylics after spending years painting with oils. i know this may sound like a daft question, but could anyone give me some tips on painting gold braid or even any metallic braid as i have just aquired the Andrea gold and silver sets and would like to know how to get the best from them please. Thank you in advance for any information.

Hi there Steven

Welcome to PF , I use acrylics but not metallics using the NMM method ...but have had sets and tge one thing I would say is it's not a case of working across the numbers , it I found I still have to mix to avoid sharp contrast .

Using a wash as well works for me at least !

There are threads about metallics will try and put links here but hopefully someone else will add something

Do a search of metallics brings up lots of threads !

Thank you for that i will keep an eye open for any links i will wait also to see if there are any other nice people who may have tips regarding the use of metallics. I have a set of scale 75 nmm colours the gold and copper set but am a bit scared of it if i am being honest.

I have used the scale 75 colour set for Gold (SSE-010) I don't use all the colours and they have a very fine pigment. I have had good results with these but I am trying to go down the route of NMM

Hi Steve.

If you like my Avatar picture you could try this method.
I don't buy a brand I just buy the colour.
I find little difference in Acrylics and have used them since before we ever met.

This will bring out the best from the sets you have bought. Try using them on some black undercoated slaters textured plasticard for practise, should only cost you a couple of quid at the Piece Hall mate.

This makes gold braid sparkle as you turn the figure.

Hi Pete, thanks for the tip. I will possibly try your method and see where it takes me, i will try owt once as we say i darkest Yorkshire. I am slowly getting there with the acrylics, just got to take my time and practice a lot.

Hi Bob, thanks for your post, i have the NMM set of gold/copper from scale 75 and as i said i am a little afraid of it at the moment. Having said that i have been watching some tutorials on you tube and it is possibly not as scary as i thought, it's all about contrasts and with a bit of practice i might be able to do a half decent job.....we'll see.

Steve, sorry, I put the wrong link on for you...try this instead.

The way I paint gold is peculiar to me it seems.
I start with
Base: chocolate mixed with a brassy gold, 60% choc.
Mid layers: Chestnut/gold, mixed same,
Highlights: Iraqui sand/gold mixed same.

But, as each layer dries, it gets a thin wash of brown black to delineate the deep shadows only.

Once all the layers are dry and have stood a day or so, I go back with a very fine brush and pure gold with a touch of sand, and carefully here and there add high points.

As the model turns, the gold braid sparkles and glitters slightly.

BUT: on this model, the gold braid against the green looked too red, so I used more of the paler and extreme highlights to reduce "the redness" I was seeing.

But it seemed fine to leave it alone on the scarlet dolman.

Metal chinscales, metal fittings and buttons are painted
Base: Chestnut/gold 30/70. Mid: gold/gloss varnish.
Highlight: Gold/Silver/gloss v, and they shine fully.

I do hope this is of some help.
