I am painting epaulettes (napoleonic jacket) hope that's what they are called ;) Anyway I am finding using vallejo old gold it doesn't leave a consitent finish and is often transparent. Any suggestions for painting gold braids and good paint etc?

I use Vallejos exclusively, and base coat with Brass (sorry don't have the number) and then use either old gold or gold as needed.

Hello Talino

To simulate thread of gold you can make it with a base of English uniform and to apply lights to the base with brown golden and in you finish them lights with yellow, you can also add to the vallejo colors the medium metallic ref. 521 that it occurs certain very similar shine to that of the thread.

for the metals I use painting of citadel gold or silver with black shine being very fine in their finish.

Like Xavier, I too have abandoned painting thread with metalic paints instead using "normal" paints to simulate the thread. Once you've finished, put a thin coat of a metalic color over it. It'll give it that "metalic" look. Also, you can put a satin or gloss coat over it instead of the metalic color. Every time I read a "These are the colors I used on my figure" out of Europe, almost everyone uses some kind of Citadel colors. Are these available in the U.S.? If so, where at?

Thanks,
Jim Patrick
