Pegaso's 90mm Spartan aristocrat painted in Vallejo, Jo Sonja and Matisse acrylics. Bronze armour painted in paints from Darkstar Miniatures Molten Metals range.

Gylippus (or Gylippos) was the Spartan General dispatched to take charge of the defense of the city state of Syracuse in 415 BC, that was being besieged by an Athenian fleet. He reorganised the defenses, retrained the defenders, then built a great wall trapping the Athenians in a swamp, until hunger and disease forced their surrender.

Beautiful paintjob Macca. Really excellent work on the shield design. The leather and metal work is also top notch. I hope you enter him into FOTM.

Thanks Tony. This is where that "Baby Poop" acrylic wash from Secret Weapon miniatures cones in handy. It's semi-satin which is real good on your leather and timber to give it that waxed look, where just using acrylics can give a dried out appearance

Great job. I love this figure (I got it sitting on my shelf waiting to be painted at some point), and you've really done him justice (y)

Regards,
Phil

Hi Macca

Great painting love the shield did you mask to achieve the pattern ?

Thanks for sharing

Thanks Kev
The shield was done mainly with a circle template. First the red background was painted on. Then with a pencil, the arcs were marked out, starting with the 4 compass points. Then I just kept going around, halving each time which kept the arcs symmetrical. Then, simply painted over with black and white.
The design was taken from Osprey's "Spartan Warrior" book, which is based on a collection of lead figurines that was unearthed in Greece in 1912
