Hello sirs,

This is my last work. The popular pirate bust from H&V. In my opinion the best pirate bust around (even without a monkey!).

All painted in acrylics. I have tried some new techniques for me.

I have tried to improve my skills with the airbrush painting the skin tones with it. I struggled a lot and had to repaint several times until I got something acceptable. I also had a problem with the drying of the paint: I used the standard Vallejo colors and standard Vallejo thinner for airbrush, but when I diluted the paint a lot to make glaces (pressure low) it took a looong time to dry. Even after drying when I tried to do some glazes with brush over it the paint reactivated and messed everything up again!!!!

I also used the sponge technique to simulate the texture on the tricorn hat following some tutorial that I found on Facebook. I’m quite happy with the result. For me the key is to finish the work with a glaze of smoke from Vallejo. It blends all the spots and tones together and gives a slight satin finish, perfect for the leather.

Comments are welcome!

Regards,
Fernando

Enormous painting Fernando. Likes me a lot. Better and better every work you finish.

Reading your comments, and what is exactly your problem with the airbush and glazes? You know i'm not an expert, but maybe i can help you.
Totally agree with your affirmation. For me is the best "classic" pirate bust. He has all. The face of a bad guy, with this nose so typical at animation films, a great attitude, the expression is dangerous... so agree that is gonna be my new project at the bench. Maybe i'll do a SbS.

Hola M.E.!

Something very strange with the paints itself. Nothing to do with my (poor) airbrush abilities. The paints (lights and shadows) once applied didn’t dry. They seemed to be dry but when I applied the last touches with brush, mainly glazes the paint reactivated and remixed with the new one!!! It was very difficult to have something decent, and I had to repaint again L I also obtained a very glossy end without proposing! Although in this case it was not a problem because I wanted a sweaty end :p

The paints were just standard Vallejo and I used standard Vallejo thinner.

Hi Fernando.

I think the glossy finish is for painting over a wet layer. Is a menor problem, cause with the matt varnish is fixed. When you go fast, is a good option to have a hair dryer near for a fast dry and avoid shines. I just use destilated water to diluite paints at brush and airbrush, no thinner, and have no problems. I don't know if Vallejo's thinner ******* the time to dry.
