Today I reviewed my stash of figures. IMG_20160412_190159.jpg I keep my collection in the living alongside my books. Being single does have its advantages. This were I paint too. I counted 157 figures in all. 61 of these are classical subjects from Pegaso, Soldiers, Art Girona, Alexandros and White Models. Until today my collection hasn't been growing anymore. Its pointlessly large enough as it is I should think.

However the announcement of Altores Studios 54 mm Mycenaean warrior changed the firm stance I am trying to make. The Altores figure in his exotic looking Dendra armour is on its way from Russia. I will do a review when it arrives. I also bought Soldier's Hector and Achilles set.

Sculpted by Andrea Laruccia one of the most profilic and talented sculptors around. As a matter of fact: nearly all classical models I have are from his hand. He is a trained jeweller and his detailing is generally stunning. I always had a soft spot for the Soldiers range especially, now unfortunately no longer marketed by Marco luchetti.

I think the pictures of Hector and Achilles below speak for themselves: a lot of beautifully detailed parts. Just look at the round shield with images from Homer's Illyad. The level of detail which is also very precisely executed is in my opinion proof of Laruccia's background in jewellery. Paradoxically it is this same level of detail that raises the difficulty level of many of Laruccia's sculpts. Like many Soldiers kits the construction itself (building as you paint) will take some effort. They are not 'shake-bake and paint kits. However I know I will enjoy painting and assembling this duo whenever that may be.

If there is any interest from forum members I can also review these three mounted Roman figures. Can't recall having seen them reviewed on PF. Please let me know.IMG_20160412_201459.jpg

Cheers Paul

Yes I agree with you Marc. But nearly all of them are sculpted by Laruccia. And he did/does the same thing for Art Girona and Alexandros. Have to say though that some of the Alexandros classicals have some small but rather annoying issues.

Can't really find out what causes this: the sculpting or the casting process. Poor fit of parts doesn't bother me that much. Most of the issues I run into have to do with irregular edges on parts of the figure.

No need to be humble about expressing your opinion by the way. These figures are very good indeed. But at the same time they require a lot of effort and can be bitchy to assemble.

I agree with everything.Altores studio Mycenaean is on its way here too.Laruccia's Achilles and Hector is part of my GA since time immemorial and I consider Maestro Laruccia a demigod of the figurines world.Take heed though, almost anyone I know who has completed this vignette has woken up one morning only to find-to his dismay-Achilles touching the ground...with his forehead. It needs a steel rod in his leg(almost all the way up to the knee)if he is to stay erect. Also if you like Mycenaeans take a look at a company called alive history miniatures(don't trust the boxart, the figures inside are a thousand times better-I should know,I have all their Mycenaean range).

Oda.

Thank you for the photo and post Paul. I was able to show my wife that I am not the only one with a large grey army, and hence put her concerns at rest. Much appreciated.:)

The "Soldiers" kit is based on the text of the Illiad and very tempting, I didn't known it was existing . So thank you for sharing
Best

@Mirofsoft: It was your post in the Altores Studios figure thread that made me look for this duo!
