Hiya, I've recently gotten an interest in sculpting.. stuff, right now I am working ony my figure, which is ending being quite troublesome. I'm not at all good at it, but when I can post some proper pictures I will put them in this thread.

He's a character from a book, the character based very much on Clint Eastwood and he's merely called the Stranger. :)
Hope you guys don't bite ;)

Regards.
Hudson

Welcome to the planet Kenneth. I can assure you we don't bite......hard anyway  and we have suffered no cassulities of late. We try to give constructive critism when it is asked for and we all try to do it in a good way so many can learn and grow. You will see the growth and development of many painters and sculpters here when you check their vbench's and look at their begginning work they first posted. We all started somewhere and grew by asking how we could do better.

If I can be of any help........please pm or email me.

Guy

Hello and welcome to the Planet.

I look forward to seeing your figure and have a question, is there a reason that you are going by the name HUDSON?

Regards from

Joe Hudson :) ;)

Ah well hehe the reason I call myself Hudson, is due to my horrible horrible memory and I am called Hudson at the other communities I have joined on the net, so I need consistency from everyplace, same password and same username to actually remember them:D
the reason is that I though Hudson was Michael Biehn character in Aliens... Alas I was wrong but the name stuck ;)

I will post some pictures, but the I just had to scrap this sculpture mainly because it was too wobbly and I think the clay is oh so very wrong, it air dries.

That is a very nice start. I look forward to seeing what shape the figure takes.

Now, do I call you Hudson, Kenneth or Long lost brother? :) I think you picked a really cool name and if for some reason you get confused with me, I apologize now for all the heartache!!

I wish you all the best,

Joe

Hi all!

Hi Kenneth and welcome to the planet!Interested in sculpting uh?I wish you a good begining and I hope we'll see cool figure from you very soon!

So,accept my advice.I think,if you really want to sculp figures successfuly, you'll have to study anatomy.Try to get an anatomy atlas(I recomment Synelnikov's one). This will be a little expensive, but you can't work without it.A univercity anatomy book would be very usefull as well(you could get a medicine book and an "Art Anatomy" book).

Then get different types of Epoxy clay:Magic Sculp,A&B,Milliput,Duro(Green Stuff),Andrea. Each of them is usefull for different cases(For example Milliput white is more elastic while Magic Sculp is softer...);it's of them will be usefull for a different part of the model(Duro is nice for sculpting hair!)

Read as more article you can find in the Planet forum for sculpting and on the entire web as well.Try to practice every new technique you learn. In this process you'll find out new tips on your own,so let us know(that's how each of us learn new things ;))

Sculpt the head first(there is a cool article on Planet for this!Give it a search!).Count the diamtre of the sculp and start calculating the lenth of the rest members(spin, arms, legs etc.).Get info from your anatomy books.Always count the lenth of the bones, not including the flesh.Cut wire of the resulted lenths and start sculpting. This way you'll avoid Anatomy mistakes, but you may make mistakes on the scale(which is more acceptable...).

The most important:Use your imagination and try new material and ways to sculp different objects(For example forging a needle to fire and hiting it with a hammer at it's point can give a nice arrow...)

We're waiting to see fine staff from your hands! We'll bite only if you quit

Cheerz!
-Kostas.

Kenneth, You've taken the first step and started a project. It's helpful to have at least one anatomy book. This will be a great aid in getting all the proportions of your figure just right. Another thing that you will need is some sort of proportion chart. Without one it can be very easy to lose sight of your figure's proportions. Good luck.~Gary

I actually got two anatomy books, sometimes I try to draw, so I got Burne Hogarth's excellent books
