A friend has just recently asked for help identifying some figures, from the estate of a family member - she says they are metal, approx 30mm figures and out of 315 only 2 have a name on the bottom of the base, which appears to be Garrison.

As shown in the attached pictures, these are models of the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War - Zulu warriors, 24th Foot, Naval Brigade (maybe?) or other Colonial troops.

I remembered that Garrison was one of the many producers of wargame figures in the early 1970s, and as far as I could recall, their range included Ancients and Napoleonics in 20mm or 25mm, though not 30mm Zulu War (as 54mm is my usual niche, I'm not certain and no expert on the smaller scale).

We found an article by Rob Young in the 'Garrison Journal (2012)' online - http://www.vintagewargamingfigures.info/files/Garrison 2012.pdf - in which he wrote that he had a number of Colonial figures in his own collection. Also, that Garrison had a shop 'The Northern Garrison' until about 1973, and that the company relocated to Thornaby, and then later to Stockton-on-Tees (which coincidentally is the home town of my friend's family).

Please, if anybody here at Planet Figure is able to give any information as to what these figures are, we would be incredibly grateful.

Hi there

Definately no expert on wargame figs but these look nice pieces , as you have 2 only named and the rest are based I presume all might be Garrison ...knowing wargamers liking to use same

Thought they could be Lamming or possibly early Hinchcliffe , they don't look bulky enough to be Minifigs

Sorry can't be more helpful

Garrison were a range of wargame figures that were a part of Greenwood and Ball's group of companies from the North East of the UK, or, at least were marketed by them. They shared adverts with the group and were a short lived company as, in those days G and B never went to any shows, so the figures were never seen. Ray

There was another "Northern Garrison" shop in Walkden near Manchester, that also produced ranges of Wargame Figs, but nowhere near as good as these. The shop closed around 1978

To all who replied to this post, your help is greatly appreciated. I have since received a photo of another loose single figure from the collection, the base clearly shows the Hinchliffe Models logo, and a product code "EG1" which I found listed in an 1976 catalogue in Mirofsoft's nostalgia compendium as a Gatling Gun and crew, in 25mm - I'm awaiting more pictures from my contact to see if the rest of this set is in the inherited collection. There was also a horse which has a rectangular base, unlike those already pictured, from Garrison, with the irregular shape - but no discernible manufacturer's identification. Also, nowhere have I been able to find any catalogue references for wargame figures of the Naval Brigade...

So, 45 years on, pondering what became of Hinchliffe Models... and it seems the company has been sold several times, once to Skytrex, and most recently in March 2008 to Hinds Figures Ltd, who, according to their website - https://www.hindsfiguresltd.com/ - "have been buying, selling and part-exchanging quality second hand wargames figures and related books, games and accessories since 1993". I'm hoping they may be of some further assistance to my friend.
