HELP NEEDED: How to include a picture in the side panel

Hi all.

When it comes to computers it seems I have five thumbs

I'm just about ready to submit my first post with pictures of a figure for a peer critique, but have no clue as to how to include a thumbnail in the sidepanel and before the thread's title???
