Hoping someone can help with a few queries re the design/colouring of a Grenadier Guards side drum from the Crimean War (you guessed it, I’m doing the CGS Grenadier drummer at the moment).
The queries are:
1. What colour was the rest of the drum shell(not the blue front with Royal Arms etc)? Was it brass, blue all round or red?
2. How many/what were the battle honours on the drum at this time? There is an Osprey colour plate of a drummer in greatcoat which would suggest 6 battle honours scrolls, 3 either side of the central design.
3. What colour was the thin band under/above the top and bottom thicker bands with wavy line design? I’ve seen references with it yellow and others with white.
4. Was there a flaming grenade motif under the central coat of arms? The modern drums appear to have the garter motif.
5. Were there flags(trophies) behind the lion and unicorn figures? The Osprey figure referenced above doesn’t seem to show flags but other references do.
Apologies if this sounds a little pedantic but just trying to clarify as the references I’ve found on the internet are a bit contradictory.
Many thanks
Neal
