Help with coldstream guard's helmet

Hi mates!

I've a little doubt with this. I can't find references about the real color and material of the cover of the helmet for the coldstream guard of the picture (the 3er from the left)

Can you help me? It looks like a kind of raincoat for the helmet, but I'm not sure....

would be much apreciate

That's the oilskin shako cover. As far as I know they were made of a type of canvas and oiled to make them waterproof so would probably be a semi-gloss black.

Jon is correct. As a member of a re-created Napoleonic unit [IMUC] we had to make these. We used white canvas painted black. Any oil or bees wax to waterproof. They were quite stiff, and the white canvas would show through after time [wear and tear, elements etc]
