I have just completed a badly casted head from some old project years ago. Its in fact my very first figure head that i have ever painted and is being used on for practice. That said i do not seek any sympathy. My painting is full of mistakes and imperfections. What I would appreciate is anyones honest opinion on what could have been done better. Also any tips or advice..
I primed the head with Tamiya (spray can) gray primer. I also can see that that i did layer the paint on the face to thick or dry, hence the crusty effect.. Note i have not sealed or given the face any glaze. The scale of the head is roughly 1/10 - 1/16.
Fyg i used AK’s figure Flesh and skin colors and followed their guidence on the package.
Thanks..

Hi Boss,
it might be the pictures but to me it looks that this face is a work-in-progress in it`s first stages. You added the basic flesh tone and now the imperfections of the casting or the crusted effect of the primer clearly shows. This should be dealt with before going on. If the face is of the size you mentioned your goal should be to paint the eyes and lips and add highlights and shadows and maybe the five-o-clock-shadow to the lower part of the face.
Anyway it is advisable to practice on good casts because even a nicely painted version of a bad cast will always just look like a nicely painted bad casting.
Good luck and enjoy the hobby!

Martin.. this is more how it turned out in the next state... i am not completely finnished but like you say. The skin turned out rather grany. I think its partly the primer and partly that i did not water down the base coat enough. Thanks again...

PS. I dont know Exactly how to remove or smooth out the grainyness of the skin. Perhaps a gloss Finnish?

Hi Boss,
if you identify imperfections like this grainyness of the surface at this scale IMHO there is no way around than to go one step back and smooth them out by the use of steelwool or something like it. If it is just paint that was not sufficiently thinned down remove the paint and start again.
When painting eyes the white in the eyes needs to be toned down by adding a very slight portion of flesh tone or red (I use the pure pale skin tone and no white for example) and the portion of the white in the eyes needs to be limited - otherwise you end up with a pop-eyed effect or a funny "astonished look" of the guy you are painting up.
Hope that helps and keep on!
Cheers, Martin
