I need some expert advice here. In all my 5 years of painting figures, I've only painted with acrylics. Never tried oils or enamels. I really like Vallejo paints but not their metal paints. In my opinion, acrylics don't seem to give sword blades, armor, etc. a realistic look. At the advice of someone who's won an award or 3 during his painting career, I bought a bottle of Gunze Sangyo Mr. Metal, stainless steel, about a year & a half ago. I've since fallen out of touch with the painter but still have the paint. My question(s) is (are), how do you use this stuff? Also, Mr. Bond, is it shaken or stirred before use? Do I need to use a thinner with it? How long does it take to dry? Can you, or does it need to, be polished with a soft cloth after it dries? Thanks in advance for any help. The first time I use it with good results, I'll post a photo.

Hello Mike,
I've been painting a lil while longer and will ask the same question.....would like to know too. Someone I know will jump forward in a few and tell us both.

Mr. Metal can be brush painted or airbrushed. I only have experience with the former. Basically, you brush it on in thin coats, after it dries buff it with a dry cloth, Q-tip, or even a tissue. The more you buff it the shinier it will be. It dries fairly quickly to boot. I'm sure there are others who have more experience who'll chime in. Here is a lengthy article about replicating armor using these paints. It may be more involved than you care for, but it'll be useful.

Hi folks
I've used Gunze Mr.Metal and I'm happy with the results.
Shake the bottle before using it.Then take a brush and paint the "future" metal object. You don't need to use thinner.
The paint dries in a few seconds but let it dry for an hour. Then polish it with a soft cloth (usually I use a clean soft brush). And that's all!
There is a very good article by Augie Rodriguez explaining the use of that paints at Lilliput site:

Sorry,It's in spanish.

My thanks to all. This will be easier than I thought. The English article that John recommends, while very informative, almost makes the process seem sorta like a Rube Goldberg invention. Thanks again.

Hey Mike!

Thats what I use for all my metals, the stainless steel is the one who seems to get the best job done. What I do is paint the surface that needs to be metallic black first, then I paint atleast 2-3 coats with the Mr. Metalizer, brushed on. And then I buff it with Q-Tips. Another thing that you might want to remember is to paint the metallic areas first, as when you buff the metals, it will spread metalic pigment all over.

Hi
On subject of metals I use Pentel (brand name) ball point pens
They are available in three colours, from stationary shops.
I use Gold, Silver and a Copper colour.

Having shaken the pen I apply over a base coat, brown for gold, blue/black
for silver. These coats are Acrylic and the ink seems to flow from the pen.
After some drying time I shade with acrylic inks, brown/orange plus some
green for darker areas on gold.
For silver I shade with washes of blue/black and blue /green.
When the silver or gold is applied it is very bright so highlights are achieved by degrees of shading.

At the moment I am painting the Roman Aquilifer from Soldiers and have produced his bronze scale armour (Lorica) using the above method.
Hope to have a pic of my figure posted soon.

Again, my thanks to all for the good advice on how to use Gunze-Sangyo Mr. Metal. The photos below are the results of my first attempt with it. I brushed it on over a black undercoat, buffed it, & then very lightly dry brushed it with Vallejo silver. He's not quite finished yet, need to do a bit more with his helmet among other things, but I'll post a photo in the gallery when he's finished. :)

hello Mike,

Excellent work.....I love the metal you have done and the flesh looks great. Did you have fun painting those stripes on his leggings?.... (y) They look great

Guy

Thanks Guy. The stripes were definitely a challenge. Trying to shadow & highlight them will be even more fun. Next picture I take, don't be surprised if he's wearing solid colored hose.

Hello Mike,
I will be doing the blending and shading today on the Celtic Warrior by Elite that I posted in pf. I will advise to you, to do what I will do, is take your time, one stripe at a time. "It doesn't have to be finished today"
I tell myself this every time i sit down to paint. good luck on your stripes.

Guy
