How to create wood effect on musket

Hi Guys
Can anyone point me in the right direction ideas for painting wood effect on my musket for my 44th gandamack bust .

Paint it bright yellow (bear with me).
Then gradually build up thin layers of Vallejo woodgrain transparent.

I base coat with a sand colour then use dots of brown red and yellow ochre (oils) then gently wipe it of with a sponge,leaving as much or as little of the oil as you like,if not quit right for you wipe it off and try again
