How does one make shade and shadow easily with 1/35 modern U.S. tri-color desert camouflage uniforms?

I used to wash the folds and creases with acrylic black, but the wash coalesced to form dull faded black spots I can hardly see. So then I paint the folds black inside, but that seems to look too strong against the sand color of the uniform.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds as if you are using too much paint in your washes and it is forming pools and drying like that.
Trying using less paint on your brush and applying several thin washes rather than one thick one.
I would also try using a dark khaki colour for your wash rather than black.
I hope this helps.

Roger.

Try this...

Something I tried as opposed to darker tan colors for washing the DCU's was something I picked up from Jaume Ortiz's great article a while back on Timelines. Try Vallejo's Chocolate Brown; I have used that specific color on my latest figure ( a 120mm scratchbuilt Special Forces operator in Afghanistan, so of course he has the desert pattern uniform ) and couldn't be happier with the results of the wash. Hope this helps.
