Hello everyone,

New to figure painting and joined on a tip from a modeling friend. I'm an armor modeler and will do 1/35 stuff for dios, and recently were given two busts from Young Miniatures to get started with the bigger stuff.

They're a couple of older busts without all the pieces, but head/hat/body intact. Will use those to get crackin at practice, practice, practice. :)

Looking forward to getting to know and learn from this talented group of folks!

Regards,

Joe

Hi Joe ,

A BIG welcome to PF ...a great forum , full of lively posts and lots of great painters and modellers who sculpt as well .

Busts are really popular and you can't go wrong with Youngs ..which ones have you ?

Enjoy your visits ...everyone is a learning experience and there are lots of members only too willing to share their knowledge.

Happy modelling ..whatever you have on the bench

Hi Nap!

Thanks for the warm welcome! I have Young's SS Panzer Officer Normandie (no headphones though, but I do have the binoculars), and the B-17 Waist Gunner (no mask). I might try scatchbuilding the headphones with Milliput....

I'm also starting to work on some 35th scale DML Waffen SS for a dio I'm building around a Jagdpanther.

There's sooo much to read and consume on this site.... lots of great information.

Welcome aboard Joe! Most of us have a secret stash of 1/35th, AFV, or 1/48th Aircraft, as well as a cohort of figures, busts etc. You will feel right at home here! :D Never be afraid to ask even the most basic of questions. (y)

Regards,

Mark

Welcome. This is a great site for advice, tips, and feedback.

I'm also in SoCal (LA area). You may already know about the figure painting groups in the area, but if not you may want to take a look at SCAHMS and LAMS. SCAHMS is a figure painting group that meets on the second Saturday of the month in La Palma near Anaheim. They will have some sort of presentation/program as well as a show and tell table to bring in and share whatever you're working on. Next month instead of the regular meeting they will be doing a workshop with various people leading demos/tutorials on various modeling topics. LAMS meets on the first Saturday of the month in Burbank. That group is a bit broader and has a combination of armor modelers and figure painters. Depending on where in SoCal you are located you may want to come check out one or both of the groups.

Thanks, Mark and Joe! Appreciate the warm welcome.

Bailey, thanks for the warm greetings and the info on the figure painting groups. I live in the Ventura area so not too convenient for SCAHMS, but will probably join and attend when I can. LAMS though in Burbank is definitely more doable for me, and I'll check them out.

Right now I'm doing a LOT of reading and preparing a shopping list :).

I actually have two W&N 7 - #1, and 00 a bit old but in decent enough shape to start... I'll have to add to them.

Tony and Ralph,

Thanks for the warm welcome. Quick question as I didn't see it in my readings yet.. I assume one would keep separate brushes for oils and acrylics? I plan to use both but just checking to be sure.

Hi Joe and Welcome! You'll learn more the first week on this site than from any book in a year. I too am a 1/35th "tread head" that is getting into the figure side of our hobby. As for the separate brushes for oils and acrylics I would do that just to be on the safe side. I've invested in some pretty good brushes and I don't want to take the chance of messing them up when I clean them. Really, since I made the switch to all acrylics...including flesh tones...I will only use my oils for washes mad some detailing. WN Series 7 brushes seem to do the trick. Enjoy the site and welcome again.

Hello Joe, welcome to the Planet:). What you'll find here is help and encouragement. Occasionally, you'll see something so good it makes you want to burn your brushes - don't! But do keep your acrylic brushes and your oil brushes separate(y).
Best wishes, Gary.

Thanks, Brian and Gary for the warm welcome! The people here are incredible, and the quality of the work is humbling. I won't burn my brushes :) and the great work here justs give a benchmark and goal to shoot for.

Regards,

Joe
