Hello once again people.

This time i came across a problem and i will need your help if possible. I'm about to finish the art girona figure of 91st foot (highlanders) South Africa 1846. As you know the pants are a light grey to white color. I did a good job there but yesterday looking it better i thought that it had a satin look. So i thought to give it a coat of matt coat (humbrol matt coat).
The result was a disaster. Instead of giving a matt look of the pants they are now glossy shiny. I tried another coat of matt but nothing.
I'm in really desperate situation since i had put a big effort into this figure.
I would like your advice what i could do so i can turn the pants matt and vanish that glossy shiny look.
Thank you all in advance.

Hi Xenofon

I suffered with this problem a few months back, here is how I got round it...
First thing, mask of the rest of the figure and base if its on one. Then from about 10 -12 inches away from the figure I sprayed some Testor’s Dull Coat from a spraycan, but I didn’t try to speed dry it with a hairdryer, as this can have the reverse effect. Make sure you spray it outside as it has a very strong smell..

I hope this helps

Dave

I had the same problem and this is what i did. I popped the figure into a crockpot for about a half an hour so that it got pretty warm. After the figure warmed up i thinned some Testors Dullcote and placed it in my airbrush. As soon as i took the figure out of the crockpot i sprayed it lightly with the dullcote and placed it back in for about 5 min and then repeated the process. The figure went from very high gloss to a nice matt finish after a few coats. The warmth causes the dullcote to dry immediately just be sure to use very light coats. Hope that helps...

Excellent tips guys. I just need to find out where i can get Testor’s Dull Coat. I doudt that there are any shops selling it here in Greece. Any websites that i could purchace it from? I hope that this method will work guys.
Thanks once again.

Stir the Humbrol matt varnish and thin it down slightly. Then airbrush it on. I've done this with some of my figures and it works quite well. But try it on some test piece before you try it on your figures. The recipe for the varnish may have changed.

Xenofon , i have found Valejos matt varnish in spray to be totally perfect and doing the most matt look u have ever see. I sprayed it over gloss lackuered surface and it made it really matt with one layer. Check it out, and it has that nice pinetree smell...mmmhhhhhhhhhhhh

Hi Lindsay
Trust me i've tried all of the above but the following is fool proof
Here's a sure fire way and it's easy.Get a NEW TIN of Humbrol matt varnish pour out about a half of the liquid that lies at the top before you stir ,then stir it well for about 10 minutes until there's no lumps left and apply with a clean dry large brush straight from the tin.Just pick up enough on the brush and put it on the area with the brush do it on one leg and then repeat with the other in one go .flowing it on to avoid brush marks. This should work, but if any shiny bits remain don't panic .Do the exact same the next day when the first coat is totally dry.
This has never failed me and saves spraying
Let me know how you get on and although the above sounds a bit long winded it's very simple .Any more help needed just ask
Brian

Thanks a lot guys for your help. The problem actually was with the humbrol bottle. All the matt varnish was stock on the bottom so I actually had to use a stick in order to mix it pretty well. Then everything worked great :)
