(y) Hi guys, this time i have a interesting question , does anybody know the history of the hobby???, i need any information or links that you can give me.

Thanks in advance
Ed

You can get a few of the last issues of Figure International. They do alot of coverage of some of the early sculptors as well as history of figures in general.

In almost excruciating detail, IMO.

If you are interested, I can scan the articles and send them to you next week. Let me know! :)

There's an old book out called "The Encyclopedia of Military Modelling" by Vic Smeed. I believe there is a history of how the hobby started in history.

If you're looking for more recent stuff, I think you'll have to piece together magazne articles. Figurines has had an excellent series on Historex that I believe also appeared in Mil Mod. Old issues of Campaigns are great for that too because they are "as it happened". I love going through the old issues of Mil Mod from the 70's to now.

The history of the Military Miniatures goes back to the time of the Pharohs. It became to expensive to bury the Pharohs with all their army, there fore lifelike (originally 1/2 size) wooden soldiers were made to guard the Pharoh in his afterlife. As time went by the wooden army became smaller in height. Hence, 2000 years ago the Military Miniature was born. I did a paper back in college on this subject as the subject was mine to choose.
There was also a book published back in the 70's that gave the history of military miniatures.

Hi Ed,

I believe the history of miniatures is linked to the human condition.
Through out history and even pre-history mankind has sought to mark his
achievement's.From the hunting scenes depicted in the Lascaux cave paintings,
the pharoes insuring they had an army in the after life and the erection of
statues to impress the peasants.

So where do we come in? I believe we consciously or unconsciously seek
to carry on fullfilling our creative needs as human beings. We paint castings
commercially produced, but maintain a desire to produce that one unique
piece. Inside every painter there is a sculptor trying to get out.

To finish this lengthy piece, the history of miniatures is about ourselves
we produce them and in doing so leave something behind to be appreciated
by others thus insuring that our history continues.

Hi Ed,
A figure I would call a classic by virtue of it's continuing popularity, is Raul Latorres "Knight of Antioch" one of my more enjoyable painting experiences.

I feel that there are so many figures from days gone by that would be classified as classics now. One of my favorites has been the Poste Militaire's 90mm Mamluk, sculpted by Jullian Hullis.
