Edson,
It looks to me as if tall grass was applied to the groundwork, and then cut down to the appropriate length. There is no way in hell that such effects, as those exemplified in your pictures, could have been achieved with standard "static" grass. Static grass is approximately 3 mm in length (and that is a generous estimate).

Hope this helps,

Depending on the scale of your piece , I have been playing with minilla rope to give me tufts of dried grass, works good for weeds in neglected corners, growing out of cracks that kind of thing. Never tried to use it to do an area, maybe in combination with other techniques. Seperate your braids on the rope , keeping the seperated lenghts intact. Drill a hole where you want the grass tuft to be located glue the rope strand into the hole, let dry. hold the strand with slite tension and using the back side of your hobby blade, make downward strokes through the strand towards the base. cut to desired lenght and shape.
Hope this helps for some of your grass detail.

Greetings,
There are 2 products better than static grass and they do "stand up" more than static grass. One is made by an Italian manufacturer called Diomaterials (product is called "Real Grass"). The other is El Viejo Dragon's scenery grass, which is made from dry seaweed.
Hope this helps!

Question, how would you use this "alternative" grass? The same as static grass? Do you still have to blow on it to get it to stand up? I too have been looking for an alternative to static grass as I have rarely seen freshly and neatly cut grass in the field. Some help here please.

Thanks, Jim

Jim,
I am working on a small artillery diorama (Civil War, of course!), and will be using both products soon. I have heard from some of my customers that they really like this product and it stands up better...but since I have not used it myself, I dont know how (method) of use to actually make it stand!
When I do use it (hopefully soon!), I'll post results.
Al Lafleche had some photos of a scene he did with this stuff, which is posted on the painters gallery of my web site (with Al's permission):

Me again...for an incredible step by step analysis on how to create (inexpensively!)
all types of groundwork from grass to icy water to trees, there are 5 pages of postings by Michael Sheads of Feba Custom Terrain Models on the Digital Dioramas web site.
Here's a direct link to these postings:

This is a "must see" and make sure your printer has enough ink before going there.
He also gives reference to another site for creating grass:

Thanks John. Terrific stuff. Funny how most painters put all kinds of time into a figure (myself included) and groundwork sometimes is more of an after thought. ;) Thanks for the link. By the way, the Stonewall Jackson and JEB Stuart in my gallery I picked up from you ;) .

Off to some groundwork, Jim
