Early morning, May 1917. A pilot and observer ready themselves for a reconnaissance mission in their Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter. Chatting to the erk that looks after their plane, a rigger makes final checks before they mount up.

Both crewmen wear scarves to help protect their faces at altitude. These reveal their pre-war sporting rivalry, as both wear university colours showing they rowed for Cambridge and Oxford. But they are in the same boat now........

The plane is a 1/32 Roden kit with decals and aftermarket extras from a company called Aviattic. The three figures chatting in front of the plane are from Elan 13 and the guy bending over is from CSM.

This was largely an exercise in improving my figure painting, as I felt it wouldn't matter too much if the individual figures weren't great because they were going to be in a vignette with a rather big plane. There's plenty that could be improved but I learned a lot and overall I think they work well in the vignette.

Taking into account that copying is the best compliment this vignette motivates me to make something similar with some WW1 1/32 airplane kits that are gathering dust on a shelf in my house and I dare not lay my hands on them yet.
Excellent!!

Hi Nigel

You have done yourself proud , the figures look really good in position , nicely painted and adding the story to a finely modelled plane , that rigging looks great , nice weathering on it as well

Clever choice of title as well

Great to see the figures complimenting the plane ....let’s hope we see more like this with both plane and AFV

Do have a look at the competitions see link below

Look forward to the next project

Have fun @ the bench

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone, it means a lot. I've had a lot of help and advice from people on here with regard to my figure painting and I really feel like I'm progressing.

I agree with Oda, your figure painting is superb and I would like to see what you can do with a WWI aircraft model as well......

Thanks very much Rob. Your figures were very enjoyable to paint, please keep doing what you do(y)
