Hi,

I'm about to begin the Roll Call set from Mitches but I've a doubt.

I know the weather was foggy, rainy and windy but was there also snow?
Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks

Looking at all the paintings and drawings of the battle, there is only Lady Butler's painting which depicts events post battle, that depicts snow. There are no mentions of snow in any written accounts. If you want to depict The Roll Call as the painting, then add snow! I hope this helps(y)

Lady Butler might have depicted snow to show up a contrast between the darkness of the figures in a wintry landscape. Artistic licence, as the book " Lady Butler Battle Artist " by Paul Usherwood & Jenny Spencer-Wood states ( p.57) " Although the artist never linked the Roll Call to a particular action, it has sometimes been assumed to refer to the Battle of Inkerman,5 November 1854, even though Inkerman was fought in rain and fog, not snow as seen in Thompson's picture".
So, damp and soggy, then, but slushy snow is as well.
