Hello all,
I've been researching paint as I get into the modelling hobby and right now, I have a huge acrylic and oil palette of high quality artist colors for fine art paintings.
I'm wondering if I can use them, or are the commercial products a different type specifically for painting models?
I'm willing to make the investment but would rather use what I have if possible, but I don't want to compromise the results.
thank you for your advice,
Mary

Hi Mary

Your artiste oils are what everyone who paints figures in oils uses,
and your acrylics will be fine also, some people use the latter for base coat before applying oils others like myself prefer plastic paints such as revell or
humbrol it is just personal preference, also you will want a primer first,
most of the automative ones are fine IE grey primer or white in spray cans
others use black primer for a darker end result "no set rules"

hope this helps

Cheers Ron :)

You can definitely use artists' paints for figure painting, in fact you may find you can achieve better results with these than you can with hobby paints depending on the subject and scale.

There is a common issue with regular artists' acrylics is that they can dry to a satin finish which isn't suitable all the time, so you'd need to use a matt varnish or medium sometimes for where you need a really good matt finish (e.g. most fabrics).
