The Nazis get their martyr: Horst Wessel is shot!
In the late 20s and early 30s of the last century, extremists on both sides fought for "power" in the German capital Berlin.
The uniformed "Sturmabteilung" (SA) of the National Socialists engage in daily skirmishes somewhere in the big city with - also uniformed - members of the "Red Front Fighters League" of the Communists - which are becoming increasingly brutal and have not been fought for a long time!
Knives, batons, brass knuckles, killers and also firearms have long been part of the arsenal of the thugs on both sides.
On the side of the National Socialists, the Berlin SA "Sturm 5" is by far the most brutal and unrestrained Nazi formation in the capital! And it is not without reason that the Nazi leaders stationed "Sturm 5" in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain, of all places, which is known to be extremely communist.
SA Storm Leader Horst Wessel has been head of the brown thugs in Friedrichshain since the summer of 1929!
After an illegal and secret military training with the so-called "black Reichswehr" (in the Soviet Union!)...
... he was quickly promoted in the Berlin SA.
The following photo shows Wessel at the head of "Sturm 5" ...:
Since "Sturm 5" in Friedrichshain barely dominates the pavement in front of its storm bar (in all other streets the SA men are threatened with death!), Wessel had been transferred to Friedrichshain, which had previously been in another "communist" working-class district - Prenzlauer Berg - was able to gain relevant experience.
From now on the fighting between Nazis and Communists in Friedrichshain will be even more brutal.
Wessel does not miss any opportunity to provoke the communists!
From the Berlin Nazi leader Joseph Goebbels ...
... personally he gets permission to build a shawm band that will be attached to his SA storm.
So far, the communists were the only ones who had such shawm bands ...
... why the instrument of bundled car horns was considered "typically communist" ...:
Sturmführer Wessel wrote his own songs for the band, including the march "Raise the flag - close the ranks!"
In the meantime the communists decide to take drastic measures against the Nazi leader!
When Wessel was about to unlock the door to his apartment at Grosse Frankfurter Strasse 62 late in the evening of January 14, 1930 around 10 p.m., Gerhard Höhler, an active member of the KPD and the "Red Front Fighters League", hit him from behind in the head shot.
The seriously injured Wessel refuses the help of the doctor who has rushed over! He knows the doctor who lives in the same house - and he's a Jew!
Finally, an ambulance arrives and transports the SA man to the municipal hospital in Friedrichshain, where an emergency operation that lasts from 22.50 to 0.45 saves his life. Wessel died there of blood poisoning on February 23.
After the bloody act, the KPD spreads the rumor that the party had nothing to do with it, that it was not about anything "political"! Rather, Wessel was a pimp and fell victim to a shootout between two gangs of pimps.
This rumor is widely believed because people know that the SA includes many men from the half-world and dark world (my father told me it was "true" back in the 1970s) and continues to this day!
The murderer of the Nazi thug, Albrecht Höhler, is after a public manhunt ...
... arrested shortly after the murder (here police photos) ...
... and sentenced to six years and one month in prison for "manslaughter".
Shortly after the Nazis came to power in September 1933, he was murdered (literally beaten to death!) By several senior SA leaders during a fictitious prisoner transport.
With the murder of Wessel, the Nazis finally have their martyr!
He gets a pompous public funeral ...
... and the song he wrote and composed is given the new title "Raise the flag!".
The so-called "Horst Wessel Lied" from now on will be equated with the German national anthem ("Deutschland, Deutschlöand über alles...") by law and will always be played with it until the fall of the Nazi state ...
