Hello guys...I post this request in the sculpting forum as I am in need of more information on this garment to enable me to sculpt it as accurately as I am able.
The picture below is a scan from a beautiful book I have on the works of the artist Hokusai, by Gian Carlo Calza.
I am interested in finding the name of the garment and some more views of it if possible.
The garment is the outer one, coloured brown & greenish, worn as a kind of tabard and hangs down at the front.

If anyone can throw any light on this I will be very grateful....many thanks.

Roy,

I think it is called a ryoto. The problem with Japanese clothing is that it is very layered and if it is altered (as in this case, where it looks as though the sleeves may be tied up to free the arms, it can look an awful lot like a different garment. Possibly a suikan, a suzukake or a motsuke-koromo.

A friend of mine gave me this link. He has a strong interest in historical japanes clothing and has made a few of these outfits as well as others.

Hope it helps.

Many, many thanks Mike...I am familiar with the web site so I'll take another look there.
The names for the garments that you've supplied give me something to search for also..
I will let you know how I get on.
Once again...thanks.

Roy.
