Box art by Danilo Cartacci.

I am very pleased to receive this bust from Steve Kirtley from S.K. Miniatures, the first in a new range of future releases from this company. This one is of a 1:9th scale Apache Indian bust sculpted by the very talented Carl Reid, the final box art painting is by Danilo Cartacci.

All parts come well protected in a sturdy cardboard box sandwiched between two layers of foam; all parts are packed in plastic zip bags. The box has full colour art on the lid to act as a painting guide. Lists of instructions/ guide are included. Inspection of the parts show an excellent level of detail and high level of casting, the image below shows a close up of the facial features that Carl has sculpted into the bust.

Here we can see the three main parts of the bust each one shows the attached block that was used in the casting process. From my initial observations there is very little cleanup needed of the parts beyond the removal of the mould blocks. We can also see in the image below all the other smaller parts of the kit as well as the feathers which have been cleverly cast with a metal rod to make a sturdy fitting into the bonnet and down the back.

Removal of the mould blocks and cleanup was quite straight forward using a razor saw, some sandpaper and a round bur on my Dremel drill to remove and smooth the plug in the right shoulder blanket piece of the casting, I spent about 20 minutes on this and ended up with a pleasing result, see image below.

Test fitting of the main three parts shows a good fit with no evidence of any filler needed for any of the joints. The images below show a dry run of the fitting of the parts. At this point I removed the mould lock of the left hand and test fitted this as well, a good fit again.

Cont…………..

There was a gap at the back of the figure where the two main parts of the bust meet which is not as alarming as it first seems. It has been very cleverly sculpted so that the piece that hangs from the back of the bonnet that holds the feathers covers this up and it cannot be seen from any angle once this is in place.

The feathers are fitted with metal rod that act as a strong bond once inserted into the locator holes on the top of the bonnet and down the back. It is recommended that you use a sharp pair of wire cutters to trim the stems for a flush fit, once glued into place they should be very strong.

The horns of the bonnet and other small parts are easily removed from their mould blocks and the minimum of cleanup is required for each part, test fitting of these shows a good fit in all instances.

The bust comes with a very unique plinth that attaches on a mounting block at the base of the figure then onto your chosen base. I would recommend pinning this top and bottom for extra security.

Conclusion:

A very nice introduction into the retail market from S.K.Miniatures. Indian subjects have always been popular and more so at the moment. The figure is well packed; all parts show a good level of detail with very good casting. Cleanup of all parts is quite straight forward with the correct tools and assembly is pretty straight forward. A fine piece which I would highly recommend, well done to Steve, Carl and Danilo, watch out for more future releases in the coming months from S.K.Miniatures.

Availabilty: on sale from Saturday 19th September 2009, Euro Militaire launch. Can be ordered from the web site after this date.
