Remember when Pelican Plaka was the paint for the in-crowd? I never had their skill, but I did use the paint, and when my last jar of the stuff dried into a solid chunk, I looked for a less expensive version of W&N's gouache. Jo Sonja's, originally just another craft shop paint with some personality's name attached, seriously filled the bill. It has the qualities of most of the tube paints like Tamiya and W&N acrylics, but is dead flat and with good color intensity and needs no special protective or reflectance reducing coat. The vehicle will separate out over time as with almost any acrylic, but less so than with some other brands, and it is simple to store the tubes upside down. I guess that dilution is the big test for our paints and this brand does well with heavy dilution in alcohol/water. The napthol crimson can be diluted to a convincing pink over a white substrate. I, too, had never heard of the retarder, though, and will have to try that.
So in answer to your question, Nap, they act like any popular tube acrylic that I have tried with the intensity and flatness of gouache.
In the name of total disclosure, I should probably mention that Ms. Sonja pays me a Substantial Sum for every positive review that I make of her paint.
Cheers, Phil
