I think you're right, Neil, if I remember correctly, that the Prussians borrowed that detail from the Poles. It was the squadron commanders in Ziethen's regiment who wore that ornament. Other officers had a plume of heron's feathers.

Menzel apparently had access to Ziethen's original kit, when he prepared his illustration, so his is probably the best one.

I think that in the beginning, it was thought that if your light cavalry dressed like the feared Turks or Tartars or Hungarians, your more "civilized" foes from the West might think you really had recruited them and it would frighten and confuse them. Anything for an advantage, right?

And some background:

From 1743, the kolback of the officers of the regiment was decorated with a golden sceptre to which was fastened a small black wing.

The officers of the regiment wore uniforms similar to those of the troopers with the following differences:

• golden tassels at the kolback
• golden braids and laces on the pelisse and dolman
• a golden chevron on each cuff of the dolman
• silver and black barrel sash
• scarlet sabretache bordered in gold and wearing a golden crowned cipher
• dark blue shabraque with scarlet wolf tooth edged and bordered gold
• scarlet trousers (as per Schmalen in 1759 and 1762)
• yellow Hungarian boots (as per Schmalen in 1759 and 1762)

The shabraques of the officers were identical to those of the troopers but their rear corners were decorated with the king's cipher on a white filed framed and crowned in gold.

In 1757, after the victory of Leuthen, Queen Sophia Dorothea gave 32 leopard skins to the officers of this regiment. From then on, the first 3 officers of each squadron wore this leopard skin over the left shoulder instead of the pelisse for reviews and galas.

Mine too! That sculpt was by Tim Richards (I think) and it’s still a great figure even by the exceptional standards of today.

Very impressive bust by Carl and in 1/6th scale it will be awesome!
