Arrest of a butcher...

On July 21, 2008, the notorious leader of the self-proclaimed "Republika Srbska" on the territory of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the trained doctor and psychologist Radovan Karadžić, was arrested in the Serbian capital of Belgrade!

The picture is from a short film and shows him immediately after his arrest...:

Karadžić, one of the main Serb leaders during the wars in the Balkans after the collapse of the People's Republic of Yugoslavia, is together with the Serb military leader, "General" Radko Mladic...

... responsible for countless war crimes and crimes against humanity; nevertheless he was - albeit reluctantly - accepted as a contact person by the international community of states, sometimes even courted!

After the end of the Yugoslav wars, he went into hiding - and was arrested on behalf of the chief prosecutor at the war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Carla Del Ponte (next photo, middle, in Srebrenica)...

... wanted since 1996 with an international arrest warrant...:

In Serbia at that time almost everyone knew where he was, but protected him! Even a bounty of five million US dollars offered by the USA did not help!

Meanwhile, Karadžić lived undisturbed in Belgrade with a false identity and a greatly changed external appearance as "Dragan David Dabić" and worked in a doctor's office as "alternative medicine".

The real Dragan Dabić worked as a farmer and builder in the village of Ruma...:

Karadžić somehow got his papers and lived under his name until his arrest - he had adapted his appearance to the peasant's appearance.

Immediately after his arrest, Karadžić was flown to The Hague and imprisoned - his trial on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity (expulsion, murder, torture) and violations of the laws of war (including "terrorizing the residents of Sarajevo") begins on April 26 October 2009.

Karadžić refused a lawyer and, at his express request, defended himself! He denied any responsibility for the Bosnian war. The Bosnian Serbs only defended themselves against "Islamic fundamentalists" who wanted to claim Bosnia for themselves after the collapse of Yugoslavia.

On March 24, 2016, the UN war crimes tribunal found him guilty of war crimes during the siege of Sarajevo, crimes against humanity in parts of Bosnia and the genocide in Srebrenica with 8,000 dead and sentenced him to a total of 40 years in prison.

Both Karadžić and the prosecutors are appealing this verdict.

In the appeals process, on March 20, 2019, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Now almost 80 years old, he is still in prison.

His sidekick "General" Radko Mladic...

... who is responsible, among other things, for the massacre of Srebrenica with thousands of dead and who was also protected by the population, was able to evade arrest by May 26, 2011.

On November 22, 2017, the War Crimes Tribunal found him guilty of genocide and an additional ten of eleven counts and sentenced to life imprisonment.

He's still behind bars to this day...

Srebrenica is a sore wound for the Dutch Army, and a good example why it is a hornets nest to get involved in other peoples arguments, as "peacekeeprs"
The whole Balkan war is a good example of the old "the victor writes the history". One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. The world is full of that juxaposition, and whilst what Karadžić and Mladic were responsible for was barbaric, they were only prosecuted because their side lost.
