The Only Success in a Stupid War ...!

In 1812 - they declared war on the British - the Americans set out to conquer Canada and incorporate it into their state.

The whole campaign is a disaster for the USA!

Their commanders are mostly incompetent and the morale of their soldiers is low because they do not know what they are fighting for.

For freedom? They are already free. About land? After all, they already have much more than enough enough of that.

Therefore, wherever US troops meet - mostly outnumbered - British troops, they suffer one defeat.

The Americans suffer a crushing defeat on October 13, 1812 at Queenston Heights ...:

After that, the Canadian dreams of the USA are over for the time being.

But the war continues, they fight here, skirmish there - and one ask: why?

Completely surprisingly, two years later, the USA is offered a second chance to conquer Canada!

On July 5, 1814, a 1,300-strong US brigade under Major General Winfield Scott...

... (who will later make it to the US Secretary of War!) unexpectedly encounters British armed forces in their camp, preparing for a Canada Day parade.

Scott is one of the few capable US commanders - and his soldiers are well trained.

The 2,100 British who were taken by surprise under General Sir Phineas Riall ...

... don't worry too much.

They are outnumbered - and they also believe they are dealing with less powerful US militias, given that Scots troop is wearing the new gray uniforms.

The British break off cleaning their uniforms, march and cross the Chippewa River to attack the Americans.

They experience their blue miracle!

The Americans break through the enemy lines with a fast, skilfully executed attack despite heavy British fire and force Riall and his troops to retreat, which is like an escape.

The British loose 137 dead and 304 wounded, the Americans 48 dead and 227 wounded.

However, Scott fails to take advantage of his success to pursue the British and completely destroy Riall's force.

Nonetheless, the victory does not insignificantly improve the morale of the US soldiers.

A little later, however, the USA can finally put their plans to conquer Canada on record, as the victory of Scott's brigade is again undone by the following British success at Lundy's Lane on July 25, 1814 ...:

When the war finally ended in February 1815, no inch changed on the border between Canada and the USA ...
