A River As Murder Weapon ...

In 1938 the troops of the Chinese "generalissimo" and dictator Chiang Kai-shek ...

...fight against invasion troops of the Empire of Japan, who seem to be unstoppable ...

The Japanese had already taken the then Chinese capital Nanking (Nanjing) the year before ...

... and killed several hundred thousand residents and refugees during a ten-day organized massacre ...:

Now the soldiers of the Tenno are approaching the metropolis of Wuhan, deep inland ...:

Tschiang Kai-shek then takes up an idea that his German military advisor General Alexander Alfred Herrmann Freiherr von Frankenhausen ...

... has worked out:

He uses the "Yellow River" (we call it "Yangtze"), on which the city of Wuhan lies, as a weapon against the Japanese ...:

On June 11, 1938, the Chinese dictator had the dikes blown up in many places at the same time at points along the Yangste that General Frankenhausen had precisely measured and determined beforehand, thus triggering a tremendous catastrophe ...:

The river floods more than three densely populated Chinese provinces!

The price of this insane act is paid primarily by the - not forewarned - Chinese civilians: a number of cities and towns and more than 3,500 villages are wiped out by the artificial flood, over 900,000 people drown and more than four million lose their belongings - and become homeless!

It is the largest human and deliberate flood disaster ever!

Here Japanese soldiers rescue the Chinese from the floods and take care of them (so that they can then use it for propaganda purposes!) ...:

The next picture shows how homeless refugees are provided with the most basic necessities by Chinese organizations - soldiers from Chiang's national Chinese army can also be recognized among the helpers ...:

The German general and originator of the plan can no longer examine the "success" of his idea - he had been called back to Germany shortly before, because the Nazi leadership was already trying to establish good relations with Japan at that time.

It did not seem (any longer) opportune to support an opponent of the Japanese!

The intentional disaster, however, fails to serve the purpose of stopping the Japanese advance:

The advance of the invaders is slowed down ...

... but by no means stopped!

The city of Wuhan will fall on October 25, 1938 ...:

Whenever did the military on either side of any conflict give a flying f### for the civilian population?
Interesting post Martin, and good photos, some of which are meat and drink to a rivet-counter like me:LOL:
